Just a note before tomorrow's President's Day shoot and membership voting and next Tuesday's continuation of the League Shoot. When you fill out your score cards, please keep the following in mind:
- Put your first and last name on the card. "Joe", "Kirby" or "Ed" is not enough.
- If you use SR, JR, etc. after your name, make sure you do so every time. I can't know which of you the card is for.
- Put your class of shoot on the card. I don't know if you shot compound fingers, recurve or primitive.
- Put the date of the shoot on the card. I don't know if a particular card is even for the weeks that count in the series.
- Sum up your scores. I won't add them up for you.
- Make sure you check the youth or cub box, if appropriate. I don't know if you're a cub or a cub shooting as a youth.
- Make sure your printing is legible!
These rules apply to the monthly shoots and the weekly shoots.
We have 4 score cards from the league shoots that have only a single name on them, and one with an unreadable name. Others have problems as noted above, also.
You can find the latest League Shoot scores posted HERE. Please check these scores late each week for correctness, including your name, sex and class. If your class shows a "*" after it, that means you turned in score cards with different classes from week to week. In that case, all your scores are entered into the highest class. For instance, one archer shot primitive one week and long bow the second. So all his scores are in the long bow class.
Remember that leg 1 of the shoot is 8 weeks long. Your top 7 scores are added up to determine your rank. If you only shoot 6 times, your 6 scores will be compared to 7 scores if someone else shot all 7 or 8 weeks, so try to show up each week.

- Remember that the Tuesday night League Shoot begins counting scores tomorrow, May 6. At the end of the first leg, on June 24, we'll sum 7 of the 8 weeks of scores, ignoring 1 week with the lowest score, and that sum will be used to award the cash prizes. So, try not to miss more than one week of shooting.
- Your board in action.
- Most of the meeting was dealing with transition matters. We have quite a few positions coming up for which we will need new board members, including: president, range master, secretary, treasurer, and one or more members at large. In addition, your famous webmaster may be scaling back his participation, depending on the demands of the day job. For some of these positions, some members have expressed a desire to step up and run for the board position. But we definitely haven't heard yet that there are people willing to fill all the positions.
- Fred, our current president, put together a nice list of transition duties that need attention, such as dealing with the yearly use permit, the insurance program, scheduling next years events, making budgets, negotiating for bale purchases and so on.
- Additional duties for which we could use additional volunteers include supplying drinks during the Tuesday shoots and for the monthly shoots, entering new memberships into the database, and putting scores into the web-based scoring system.
- We have a reminder that the next newsletter is due. If you have stories, articles or pictures you'd like to contribute, please contact any board member, or go directly to the Goddess of Knowledge, Theresa and give her the materials directly.
- We are considering changing our free lesson program to a primarily once-a-month program. We are getting a lot of interest in the free lessons and it's getting difficult to accommodate all the requests in the current, ad-hoc manner. We are currently thinking about the first Sunday of every month at noon.
- We discussed the new ATV. Not everyone seems to know that you must wear a helmet to use the ATV. This isn't a "I'm telling you this, wink, wink" sort of advisory. If you won't wear the helmet, don't use the ATV. You also must be given at least cursory instruction on the device before you can use it, including knowing a small set of things like never having two people on the machine. And it's time for some maintenance on the unit.
- We are still looking to come up with all the bales we need for the range. We're going to begin using the new "super butts" more on the range as the excelsior butts become harder and harder to get.

- Don't forget that our friends at Mount Madonna hold shoots on the second Sunday of the month, beginning at 1PM. On June 8 they are holding the State Hunter/Field/Animal round and on July 13 is their Bug Shoot.

Thursday, April 17, 2008
- The Tuesday evening 3D League has begun. Look above for the flyer. Scoring begins in May.
- Don't forget this Saturday's Traditional Shoot. The flyer can be found above.
- Another great club, the Santa Cruz Archers, has their "In the Redwoods" Shoot on May 31 (traditional) and June 1 (all classes). Their flyer can be found HERE.
- Don't forget to renew your membership if you haven't already. The form can be found HERE, or just show up for any shoot, fill out the form, and pay $40 for an individual or family membership.
- Remember that the May President's shoot is free for members and members will elect the club board for the next year. If you have an interest in giving back to the club, besides the monthly work parties or helping in setup, take down or registration at any of the shoots, you should consider serving on the BHU board. This requires attending one meeting per on the first Thursday of every month from 7 to 9 pm. Each position has specific duties. You can see the duties for each position HERE. There are also "Member At Large" positions available which don't require being elected, just a desire to help. If you'd like to attend the last board meeting before the election, contact us at by sending e-mail to info@bhuarchers.org, or talking to any of the current board members.
- Let me call out separately that we have not had a separate full-time treasurer in the club for most of the last 2 or 3 years and the position really needs to be filled. If you have a computer and a couple hours a month to work up budgets, write checks and help track balances and expenses, please consider volunteering as or treasurer for next year. We can provide training in using the accounting software if you have basic computer skills.
- Speaking of work parties, for some reason announcements of last Saturday's work party was bounced for nearly every email address at yahoo.com. Remember, if you are not getting the monthly e-mail announcements of important club information, such as work party announcements, then we probably don't have your correct e-mail address. At any shoot, talk to someone who is doing registration, or send us a notice to info@bhuarchers.org and let us know your correct e-mail address.

- The flyer for the 2008 Primitive Shoot on April 19 can be found HERE.
- Your board in action.
- Discussion of the JOAD program is tabled at this time.
- Discussion of procedural issues. In particular, we need to have a formal vote for board decisions.
- Discussion of ad-hoc events, such as the upcoming "Team Competition" for this month's shoot. We want a bit more oversight and coordination of these activities so that everyone involved is aware of the changes and requirements.
- The 3D League Shoots, which start on Tuesday, April 15, could use more volunteer help, especially in registration, score keeping, setup and takedown. In April and September, registration will start at 4, the shoot starts at 5, and takedown starts at 6:30. In the intervening months, the times are 1/2 hour later except that takedown will start at 7:30. Late shooters should start with the upper range and targets 1 and 2 first as those will be the targets first taken down.
- A reminder that the scoring rules are that you must shoot at least half the weeks of either to be eligible for a prize, and the total score is is computed from the sum of all weekly scores for the leg minus the lowest score you have for one week (which would be zero if you missed a week).
- A lot of discussion was about ongoing maintenance and or target bales purchase for this year. We're planning a mixture of two kinds of target bales. We're still working on getting a shed for the new ATV.
- We're looking into the best location for a "running pig" target. Currently, we're thinking that down by the "bee tree" may be the best.

- We have purchased a new ATV for the range. There are restrictions on its use—only certain people can use it, only one person on it at a time, and a helmet must be worn.
- The Winter, 2008 newsletter has been mailed.
- More work was done on designing the new signage that will show up on the range soon.
- Final work for the new "non competitive" class for upcoming shoots. Look for a notice about this at each shoot.
- We went over the range projects, especially the new bridge that will be built near target 5.
- We discussed the upcoming Hunter's Education Course that will be held on the range, probably during the first week in June. Details will be forthcoming.
- We may be having a club-sponsored Bow Jam and Primitive Skills Workshop. Details will be forthcoming.
